MOHALI: A Mohali court on Wednesday sentenced former Punjab Vigilance Bureau SP Amandeep Kaur and businessman Rajinder Singh alias Gopi to three years’ imprisonment in a 2011 abetment to suicide case involving Excise and Taxation Officer Ranjit Singh.
The court held both accused guilty of abetting the suicide of Ranjit Singh, who allegedly took the extreme step after being falsely implicated in a corruption case and subjected to harassment and extortion.
Following the court’s orders, police arrested both convicts, who had been out on bail during the trial.
The case was registered on the complaint of Manjit Kaur, wife of the deceased officer. In her complaint, she alleged that the accused persons had conspired to falsely implicate her husband in a vigilance corruption case by fabricating evidence and staging a fake trap operation.
According to the prosecution, a purported vigilance trap was laid near Phase-2, Mohali, on March 20, 2011, allegedly involving then SP (Vigilance) Amandeep Kaur, Havildar Harvinder Singh, businessmen Rajinder Singh alias Gopi, Rajiv Sood, Paramjit Singh and others.
Subsequently, an FIR under Sections 7, 8 and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against Ranjit Singh.
Manjit Kaur alleged that the accused extorted Rs 8 lakh from her husband and demanded an additional Rs 50 lakh in exchange for clearing his name and sparing him from further action.
Unable to bear the pressure and humiliation, Ranjit Singh allegedly committed suicide on April 22, 2011.
During the investigation, a departmental committee reportedly found that Ranjit Singh had been falsely implicated in the corruption case.
After a prolonged legal battle spanning nearly 15 years, the Mohali court convicted Amandeep Kaur and Rajinder Singh alias Gopi and sentenced them to three years in prison.
The matter had drawn significant attention in bureaucratic and legal circles in Punjab, with the family of the deceased officer consistently alleging misuse of power and fabrication of evidence by vigilance officials and private individuals.
