SRI ANANDPUR SAHIB: Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, said that today the governments are trying to destroy the unique identity of the Sikhs and in this direction the so-called law against sacrilege is also proving to be an act of giving poison in a sweet manner.
He said that the attempt to confine the spiritual greatness of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji within the legal ambit on the pretext of this law is extremely despicable and the Panth will have to bear the harmful consequences of this law in the future. He said that no government in the world can make any law against the will of any religion in the internal affairs of that religion but the Punjab government has not only made the law without the consent of the Sikhs but has also taken the shameful step of bringing the Sikh code of conduct under legal interpretation. He clearly said that the government and its mouthpieces should understand that such acts by the Sikhs .No law will be tolerated at any cost on the occasion.
He said that there is a deep conspiracy to deprive the common Sikh seeker of the spiritual knowledge of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji through fear of this law, which Sikhs will not allow to succeed at any cost.
Akal Takht Jathedar was addressing the meeting of various sikh Panthic organizations which was held here today regarding the legal interpretation made against Gurmat principles and Sikh tradition and the controversial provisions in the new ‘The Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026’ brought into force by the Punjab government.

Speaking on the occasion, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, said that the government's conspiracy to bring the spiritual aura of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji under secular law has become a national challenge, which needs to be faced with unity by rising above all factions.
He said that the government has tried to ignore all other priority issues of Punjab by playing political stakes in the name of the law to prevent sacrilege.
He clarified that the Sikh community is not against giving the strictest punishment to those who commit sacrilege, but those provisions included in the act that hurt Sikh sentiments should be removed immediately. He said that the government should respect Sikh sentiments and Panthic morality .
On this occasion, Giani Tek Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, while addressing the gathering, said that the Punjab government has deliberately passed the draft of ‘Jagat-Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill-2026’ in English language under a conspiracy so that the common Sikh community can be misled. He said that instead of fixing the liability of the heirs of minor or mentally ill accused of sacrilege in the law, it is condemnable to put Granthi Singhs, preachers and Gurdwara committees in the dock.
He said that there is already apathy among the new generation to become Granthi Singhs in the Panth and such a misleading law will cause Sikhs to break away from their Shabad Guru due to some of its controversial provisions.
On this occasion, Granthi Singh Sahib of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar Giani Baljit Singh, Shiromani Committee member Bhai Amarjit Singh Chawla, Sikh thinker S. Talwinder Singh Buttar, preacher Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Rataul, Prof. Sukhwinder Singh, S. Inderjit Singh Baba Bakala and Sant Mahavir Singh Tajewala also addressed the gathering and termed the Respect Amendment Act as an attempt by the government to monitor the relationship between the Sikhs and the Shabad Guru and urged the Sangat to be aware and take necessary steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
