Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Welcomes Resumption of Pakistan Pilgrimage for Guru Arjan Dev’s Martyrdom Anniversary After 14 Years
AMRITSAR: Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, has welcomed the Sikh pilgrims' Jatha scheduled to leave for Pakistan on June 10 to pay obeisance at Sikh Gurdhams (religious places) on the martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev after a gap of 14 years.
He also expressed gratitude to the governments of India and Pakistan for facilitating the visit.
He said that under the 1974 agreement between the two countries, four Sikh jathas travel annually to Pakistan for pilgrimage to Sikh Gurdhams. However, the last jatha to visit Pakistan on the martyrdom anniversary of the Fifth Sikh Guru had travelled in June 2013.
Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj stated that since Sri Guru Arjan Dev attained martyrdom in Lahore, it is essential for the entire Khalsa Panth to gather there every year on the Guru’s martyrdom anniversary and pay homage through Gurmat programmes and religious congregations.
The Jathedar recalled that during his visit to Pakistan in November 2025 on the occasion of the Prakash Gurpurb (birth anniversary) of Sri Guru Nanak Dev, he had offered an Ardas (Sikh prayer) at Gurdwara Dera Sahib, praying that the long-discontinued Sikh jatha for Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martyrdom anniversary be resumed. He said the matter was also discussed in detail with the president and representatives of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, who had responded positively to the proposal. He expressed happiness that the prayer offered before the Guru had now been fulfilled.
Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj further asked the governments of India and Pakistan to reopen the corridor to Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, which has remained closed for nearly a year, depriving Sikh devotees of the opportunity to visit the sacred shrine associated with Sri Guru Nanak Dev. He asked both governments to respect Sikh sentiments and reopen Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor at the earliest so that devotees can once again pay obeisance at the Guru’s abode.
He added that the entire Guru Khalsa Panth prays daily for unrestricted access to Sikh Gurdhams that were separated during Partition and expressed hope that the Sikh community’s prayers regarding the reopening of Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor would also be fulfilled soon.
