MOHALI: With the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing a comfortable majority in the Municipal Corporation elections, attention has now shifted to the selection of the next Mayor of Mohali.
Among the names doing the rounds in political circles, four-time councillor Sukhdev Singh Patwari and AAP spokesperson Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia have emerged as the leading contenders for the city's top municipal post. Another prominent claimant is Sarabjit Singh Samana, a second-term councillor and son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh.
Political observers believe Patwari enjoys an advantage because of his vast experience in municipal affairs and long association with public life. Recently elected from Ward No. 34, Patwari has entered the Municipal Corporation for the fourth consecutive term, underlining his strong grassroots support and popularity among residents. Patwari has staked claim for the top post on the basis of his seniority and administrative experience.
Known for raising civic issues and advocating improvements in urban infrastructure, Patwari is regarded as one of the most experienced councillors in the city. Supporters argue that his familiarity with municipal administration and governance makes him a strong candidate to lead the Corporation.
Patwari has also been actively associated with cooperative and social institutions. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Mohali Cooperative Bank for nearly a decade and earlier headed the Mohali Press Club, where he frequently highlighted issues concerning civic amenities and public welfare.
Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia, who has won a seat in the Municipal Corporation for the first time, is also being seen as a serious contender. As an official spokesperson of the AAP in Punjab, Ahluwalia enjoys visibility within the party and is considered a prominent face among the younger generation of leaders.
Sarabjit Singh Samana, meanwhile, remains a strong aspirant owing to his political background and growing influence in local politics. Having secured a second term as councillor, he is backed by a section of party leaders who favour a younger leadership profile.
The final decision, however, will rest with the AAP leadership. Party sources indicate that factors such as experience, contribution to the organisation, public image and administrative capabilities are likely to weigh heavily in the selection process.
With the newly elected Municipal Corporation set to take shape, all eyes are now on the AAP high command as it prepares to choose Mohali's next Mayor and the person who will steer the city's development agenda in the coming years.
