CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday granted regular bail to Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, the Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Sanaur, in a rape case registered against him at Civil Lines police station in Patiala last year.
According to reports, the High Court directed Pathanmajra to report to the concerned police station twice every month and restrained him from contacting the complainant, her relatives or witnesses either directly or indirectly. The court also made it clear that violation of any of the bail conditions could lead to cancellation of the relief granted to him.
Pathanmajra had recently surrendered before a Patiala court in connection with another illegal mining case after remaining lodged in Bathinda jail in the rape case. Earlier this week, he had also secured bail in the mining case, though he continued to remain behind bars due to the rape charges.
The case against the legislator was registered in September 2025 following a complaint by a Zirakpur-based woman, who accused him of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation. The complainant alleged that the MLA had sexually exploited her on the pretext of marriage while concealing details about his earlier marriage.
The controversy had intensified after Pathanmajra allegedly evaded arrest and remained absconding for several months. Punjab Police had finally arrested him from near Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh in March this year after a multi-state search operation.
During the course of proceedings, Pathanmajra had approached the High Court challenging the proclamation proceedings and arrest warrants issued against him, claiming he was residing in Australia and had been falsely portrayed as absconding. However, the High Court had earlier refused to quash the warrants.
Following the latest High Court order granting bail, Pathanmajra reportedly thanked his supporters through social media posts.
