BJP Chandigarh Chief Faces Backlash Over ‘Punjabis Are Emotional Bloody Fools’ Remark
Malhotra apologises for his words pointed at himself
CHANDIGARH: A political storm has erupted in Punjab after BJP Chandigarh president Jatinder Pal Malhotra was accused of making derogatory remarks about the Punjabi community during a sports function, prompting sharp reactions from opposition parties and calls for statewide protests.
The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Malhotra at a sports event on June 1, in which he was heard saying that “Punjabis are emotional bloody fools.” The remark surfaced on television channels and social media on June 17, triggering widespread criticism.
The Congress condemned the statement and accused the BJP leader of insulting the pride and sentiments of Punjabis. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also launched a strong attack, announcing plans to hold statewide protests against the BJP over what it described as an insult to the Punjabi community.
As the controversy intensified, Malhotra issued a clarification, expressing regret over the words used but maintaining that his statement had been taken out of context. He claimed that he had not intended to insult Punjabis and that the remarks were being misinterpreted.
Explaining his position, Malhotra said he was referring to himself rather than the entire Punjabi community. According to him, he had been speaking about his own tendency to become emotionally involved in public causes and community activities, often spending beyond his means. He argued that he had used the expression while describing himself as an “emotional bloody fool” for exceeding his budget in organising and supporting sports events and public functions.
Malhotra, who hails from Amritsar, said Punjabis are known for their generous nature and willingness to spend freely on social and sporting events. He maintained that his comments were intended to highlight this trait rather than demean the community.
The BJP leader also questioned the timing of the controversy, pointing out that the function had taken place on June 1 while the video gained traction only after being aired by television channels more than two weeks later.
Despite his clarification, opposition parties remained unconvinced and continued to target the BJP leadership over the issue. Political observers believe the controversy could further intensify the already charged political atmosphere in Punjab, with parties seeking to mobilise public opinion around issues linked to Punjabi identity and pride.
The row has dominated political discourse in the state, with demands from opposition leaders for an unequivocal apology and greater sensitivity from public representatives while addressing community-related issues.
