Gatka Federation UK to host 12th National Gatka Championship on July 12
NEW YORK: The World Gatka Federation (WGF), the global apex body dedicated to promoting, standardizing, and advancing the traditional Sikh martial art of Gatka, has announced that the Gatka Federation UK will host the 12th National Gatka Championship on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
WGF Chairman Sardar Kalvinder Singh Fresno and WGF General Secretary Dr. Deep Singh commended the ongoing efforts of Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, President of Gatka Federation UK, for his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Gatka. Dhesi, the first turbaned Member of Parliament in the UK and current Chairman of the House of Commons Defence Committee, has played a pivotal role in ensuring that this rich Sikh martial heritage continues to flourish for future generations.
Dr. Deep Singh highlighted that the Gatka Federation UK has successfully organized the National Gatka Championships for the past 11 years. The upcoming 12th National Championship will be held in collaboration with Gurdwara Singh Sabha London (East) and SSLE Sports Club at Orchard Playing Fields, Goodmayes Lane, IG3 9PW. Players from across the United Kingdom, representing various age categories, are expected to participate. This championship will follow rules -regulations and code of conduct approved by the WGF.
Chairman Kalvinder Singh Fresno further praised Tan Dhesi and the collective efforts of the Gatka Federation UK, noting that the championship will provide a dynamic platform for talented athletes to demonstrate their skill, discipline, and sportsmanship. He emphasized that the event not only shows athletic excellence but also strengthens cultural identity and community pride.
“Tan Dhesi’s tireless work ensures that Gatka continues to thrive while upholding its spiritual and historical significance,” Fresno said. “These championships are more than competitions—they are living reminders of the values of courage, self control, and discipline that Gatka instills.”
Dr. Deep Singh also appealed to NRIs and Gatka enthusiasts worldwide to actively support the World Gatka Federation in its mission to promote Gatka on a global scale.
During the press briefing, several Gatka officials were present, including Gagandeep Singh, Coordinator of the USA Gatka Championship; Sarabjit Kaur Sikh activist, Sujan Singh, Jaskirat Singh, Gurpreet Singh Patiala, and Jasved Singh, all Gatka coaches from New York; as well as Harbhajan Singh from North Carolina.
