PHAGWARA: Residents of Darvesh village on Sunday staged a protest demanding the closure of a tar plant located near their village, alleging that emissions and pollution from the facility pose a serious threat to public health and the environment. A large number of villagers participated in the demonstration, raising slogans against the plant and urging the authorities to take immediate action.
The protesters alleged that smoke, foul odor, and other pollutants released from the tar plant have been affecting the quality of air in the area. They claimed that the pollution is creating health hazards for local residents, particularly children, elderly people, and those suffering from respiratory ailments.
Addressing the gathering, Aam Aadmi Party BC Wing leader Daljit Raju extended support to the villagers and voiced concern over the alleged environmental and health risks posed by the plant. He said that compromising public health would not be tolerated at any cost and warned that the agitation would be intensified if the administration failed to address the issue and take appropriate action against the plant.
The villagers demanded an immediate inspection of the facility and urged the administration to shut it down if it is found to be harmful to public health and the environment. They also warned that their protest would continue until their demands are met.
During the protest, SHO Satnampura reached the site and held discussions with the demonstrators. Meanwhile, SDM Randeep Singh Dhir assured the villagers that efforts would be made to resolve the matter at the earliest.
