CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress today flagged its concerns and apprehensions about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls being done in Punjab.
A delegation of the senior party leaders led by Member Parliament Dr Amar Singh and comprising of PCC general secretary-organisation Capt Sandeep Sandhu and Gagandeep Singh, raised various issues during an all party meeting convened by the Chief Electoral Officer Punjab here today.
Later briefing reporters Dr Amar Singh and Capt Sandhu disclosed that they raised the issue of duplicate votes from other states who are registered in Punjab.
They said, particularly the voters from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where the SIR process has already been completed, need to be screened in the Punjab electoral rolls.
The party leaders urged the CEO to raise the matter with the Election Commission of India, since the duplicate voters from other states can be cross-checked by the ECI only.
The Congress leaders also raised the issue of 17 percent of the voters who have not been mapped as yet. They said, it comes to around 34-35 lakh votes, who can lose the right to vote if immediate measures are not taken. The party also demanded an adequate “response time period” from the commission for the remedial measures in case anybody’s vote is deleted.
They asked the commission to provide the lists of the deleted and newly added voters to the political parties for better transparency. They also said that the commission should ensure that the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) closely coordinate with the Boot Level Agents (BLAs) for better functioning.
The Congress leaders also emphasized that the enumeration forms in Punjab be provided in the Punjabi language and not in English or Hindi.
