NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her matrimonial home in Delhi’s Nangloi area, after recording two videos, where she is purportedly seen accusing her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to continuous harassment, officials said on Thursday.
According to officials, information regarding the incident was received by Nangloi Police Station on Monday at around 11:09 a.m. The message stated that a woman, identified as ‘A’, a resident of Nangloi Extension and aged about 26 years, had been brought to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial (SGM) Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
During the preliminary inquiry, police found that the woman had allegedly died by suicidal hanging. Since the death occurred within seven years of her marriage, the matter was reported to the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) for inquest proceedings in accordance with legal provisions governing such cases.
Officials said that the Tehsildar of Mundka recorded the statement of the deceased’s mother, who alleged that her daughter’s husband, Rohit, frequently assaulted her while under the influence of alcohol. The family has claimed that the woman had been facing prolonged difficulties in her marital life.
Investigators also gathered information regarding Rohit’s medical condition. According to officials, he is currently undergoing treatment for a serious head injury sustained in an accident a few months ago. Medical assessments shared during the inquiry reportedly indicate that his condition remains critical and that “he is not likely to survive beyond 2-3 years,” as per doctors treating him.
As the investigation progressed, members of the deceased woman’s family handed over two videos that were allegedly recorded by her shortly before her death. Police said the recordings are being examined as part of the investigation.
According to officials, the videos “reflect intense psychological distress, fear for life due to continuous harassment by her husband.”
Investigators are assessing the contents of the recordings along with other available evidence to determine the circumstances leading to her death.
On Tuesday, the post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted as part of the legal process. Following the inquiry and based on the allegations made by the family as well as the material collected so far, the police registered a case against the husband.
Further investigation is underway, and police are continuing to examine all aspects of the matter.
