AMRITSAR: The 100th martyrdom anniversary of Teja Singh Samundri, a prominent leader of the Gurdwara management reform and Akali movement, was observed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in his memory at the Teja Singh Samundri Hall established at the Shiromani Committee office.
The centenary event was attended by prominent personalities including head Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Giani Amarjit Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, President of the Shiromani Committee Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Giani Tek Singh, Head of Damdami Taksal Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, senior Akali leaders S. Balwinder Singh Bhunder and grandson of S. Teja Singh Samundri and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu. After the Bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, the Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib Hazuri Raagi Jathas performed Gurbani Kirtan and after Ardas, the Holy Hukamnama was taken by Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, the head of Damdami Taksal. While narrating the story, he appealed to the Sangat to take inspiration from the life struggle of S. Teja Singh Samundri.
Speaking on the occasion, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said that Teja Singh Samundri was a person of sacrifice who dedicated his entire life to the cause of the Panth.
He said that during the Gurdwara Management Reform Movement, the Sikh warriors staged a front against the British rule which was called invincible and by achieving victory against the atrocities of the government, elevated the name of the Panth. He said that S. Teja Singh Samundri played a leading role in establishing and strengthening Sikh institutions. He said that such leaders have always been a source of inspiration for the nation. He said that even today, there are continuous conspiracies being made to weaken Sikh institutions. It is the great need of the hour to unite by putting aside our differences to combat these anti-Panth conspiracies
He said that at that time our leaders had started the Akali newspaper to convey the voice of truth to the people. Even today, there is a need for us to have a free press, for this the Panth should make efforts.
Speaking on the occasion, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that S. Teja Singh Samundri fought for the Panth when the British rule was in full force and the Mahants were committing crimes in the Gurdwaras. S. Teja Singh Samundri was the leading leader among the heroes who fought against this, representing the Sikh sentiments. S. Samundri clearly refused to bow down to oppression by rejecting the condition of apology from the government for his release. He said that he was such a leader for whom the institutions were bigger than himself. He played a leading role in every front for the Panth. Advocate Dhami recalled the selfless service rendered by S. Teja Singh Samundri for the Panth and appealed to the youth to take inspiration from his life.
On this occasion, S. Teja Singh Samundri's grandson S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that it is a matter of great pride for him that he is from the legacy of S. Teja Singh Samundri. He said that S. Samundri always talked about the Panth. If necessary, he did not hesitate to donate his property to the Panth account. He said that S. Teja Singh Samundri, while doing great work for the Panth and society, also made special efforts to connect children with education and made special contributions to opening schools and colleges. He said that efforts should be made to connect the new generation with their heritage, so that they can take inspiration from the work of their ancestors.
Meanwhile, senior Akali leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder said that today the Shiromani Committee is remembering that legacy when the Sikhs defeated a major power in the world with Guru's faith and Panthic courage. He said that this was an example of national unity, from which we should take inspiration even today and move forward unitedly.
VOn this occasion, prominent personalities including S. Teja Singh Samundri's family members S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Bibi Simran Kaur Sandhu, Bibi Kiran Kaur Sandhu, S. Gurjit Singh Sandhu, Bibi Sunita Kaur Sandhu were also specially honored.
