Khalsa University and Round Glass Foundation Join Hands to Develop World-Class Sports Infrastructure in Amritsar
AMRITSAR: In a major boost to sports development in the region, Khalsa University Amritsar KUA) and USA-based Round Glass Foundation (RGF) today jointly laid the foundation stone for the ultra-modern Hockey and Football sports stadium at the campus here. The Olympics and FIFA standard Hockey and football playgrounds will be ready in one and half year and would commence national international level matches.
An MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was recently signed in which RGF committed to bear all expenses. The construction activities kick started today with the ground-breaking ceremony, presided over by Khalsa University and RGF senior functionaries. The new world-class stadium will provide 24-hours sports facilities to students and aspiring sports persons, enabling them to train according to international standards.
He expressed confidence that the proposed infrastructure would attract national and international sporting events while inspiring more young people to pursue hockey and football. He also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Kanwaljit Singh, Controller of Examinations, Khalsa University, for his pivotal role in facilitating the signing of the MoU with the Roundglass Foundation.
The foundation stone was laid by Mr. Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, Pro-Chancellor, Khalsa University, in the presence of Dr. Mehal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Khalsa University, Mr. Gunbir Singh, Joint Secretary (Finance), KCCS, along with other office-bearers of the Khalsa College Charitable Society and the University.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chhina said that the initiative would provide world-class sporting facilities to students and aspiring athletes, enabling them to train according to international standards. He expressed confidence that the proposed infrastructure would attract national and international sporting events while inspiring more young people to pursue hockey and football. He also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Kanwaljit Singh, Controller of Examinations, Khalsa University and Dean Sports, for his pivotal role in facilitating the signing of the MoU with the Roundglass Foundation.
While laying the foundation stone, KUA Pro-Chancellor Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said they were happy to start the construction of this vast stadium that will have international level facilities, where the matches could be held during days and even nights. The stadium will be spread in more than 12 acres inside the campus with pavilions and grounds equipped with astro-turfs and seating capacity of more than 30,000 spectators initially.
Chhina who was accompanied by KU VC Dr.Mehal Singh, Governing Body members, dean, directors and Olympians including Rajinder Singh, Balwinder Shammi, Sanjeev Kumar and Shamsher Singh, envisages the development of state-of-the-art sports infrastructure as a boon for the entire region. “There is no such a stadium available for sports persons in the whole of Punjab”, he said adding that the complex will have ancillary facilities aimed at creating a comprehensive sports hub for training and competition.
In their message RGF patron Arjuna awardee Sarpal Singh, his US based entrepreneur son Gurpreet Sunny Singh and his team said the aim is to identify and nurture talent in hockey and football in north India. They added that Foundation has recently installed a high-tech astro turf facility in Mohali and has committed to developing similar quality infrastructure at Khalsa University now. They have already set up sports committees in 121 villages in Punjab to identify talents.
Dr. Mehal Singh expressed gratitude to KU Chancellor Satyajit Singh Majithia and other senior functionaries of the varsity for their continued support towards educational and sports initiatives. He said the project would greatly benefit students by providing them access to modern training facilities and opportunities to compete at the highest levels, including international competitions.
Reaffirming the University's commitment to youth development, he urged students to actively participate in sports and cultivate qualities such as discipline, dedication, teamwork and leadership. Office Bearers including Dr. Dalbir Singh Ghumman, Gunbir Singh, PS Bal, SS Sethi, LS Dhillon, Gurpreet Singh, Dean Sports. Dr.Kanwaljit Singh, KU Registrar Dr.Khushvinder Kumar, Dr.Surinder Kaur, Dr. RK Dhawan, Dr. Jaspal Singh and others were present.
