AMRITSAR: Member of the Punjab State Food Commission, Mr. Vijay Dutt, today conducted a surprise inspection of various government schools and Anganwadi centres in the Rayya area of Amritsar district. During the inspection, he reviewed the ground-level implementation of schemes being run under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013.
During his visit, Mr. Vijay Dutt inspected the Mid-Day Meal arrangements, quality of food being served to children, cleanliness, kitchen management, and availability of safe drinking water. He directed the concerned officials and staff to ensure that children are provided with clean, nutritious and quality food and that all prescribed standards and guidelines are strictly followed.
He also encouraged schools and Anganwadi centres to develop “Kitchen Gardens” so that fresh and nutritious vegetables could be made available to children. At the same time, he advised the women cooks preparing Mid-Day Meals to maintain proper hygiene while preparing food and to strictly follow health and safety standards.
During the inspection, it was also observed that some schools did not have proper and updated information regarding the designated day for distribution of fruits to children during the week. The Punjab State Food Commission expressed concern over this issue. Mr. Vijay Dutt directed the concerned authorities to ensure that fruits and nutritious food are provided to children on time as per the prescribed menu and government guidelines.
Mr. Vijay Dutt further directed officials to ensure the quality of drinking water by conducting regular TDS testing and maintaining the “Food Test Register” properly on a regular basis. He also stressed the importance of regular health check-ups for children as well as Mid-Day Meal cooks.
During the inspection, Mr. Vijay Dutt interacted with the children and also shared a meal with them. He stated that the Punjab State Food Commission is fully committed to ensuring safe, clean and nutritious food for children and that such surprise inspections will continue in the future as well.
He said that any negligence regarding the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 and related welfare schemes will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
He further stated that if any person has any complaint or issue related to NFSA 2013 or related schemes, they may register their complaint on the Punjab State Food Commission helpline number 9876764545.
