Kewal Singh Dhillon Appointed Punjab BJP President
CHANDIGARH: Former Congress MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon (76) , who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022, was today appointed the new president of the Punjab BJP unit.
Dhillon succeeds Sunil Jakhar, who had earlier resigned from the post but was asked by the party leadership to continue till alternative arrangements were made.
A prominent businessman and a close loyalist of former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh during his Congress days, Dhillon represented the Barnala Assembly constituency from 2007 to 2017 as a Congress MLA.
After quitting the Congress, Dhillon joined the BJP in 2022 amid a series of political realignments in Punjab following Capt Amarinder Singh’s exit from the Congress.
Dhillon had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Sangrur on a BJP ticket but was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer.
Talking to mediapersons after reports of his appointment surfaced, Dhillon said he had no prior information about the decision as he was busy in party work.
“Whatever responsibility the party has entrusted me with, I will fulfill it with full dedication and honesty,” he said.
Targeting the ruling AAP government in Punjab, Dhillon alleged that the state was facing several serious problems, especially deteriorating law and order.
“Punjab needs a strong and stable government. The BJP will form the next government in the 2027 Assembly elections,” he asserted.
He further claimed that the BJP leadership and cadre in Punjab were united and working collectively to strengthen the party in the state. “After West Bengal, the party’s focus is now on Punjab,” Dhillon said, indicating the BJP’s intention to expand its political base in the border state.
Emphasising Punjab’s social fabric, Dhillon said the state has always been known for communal harmony and brotherhood. “The BJP will work to strengthen communal harmony and maintain peace in Punjab,” he added.
Dhillon’s appointment is being seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its organisation in Punjab by bringing in leaders with strong regional influence and experience in state politics. Political observers believe the party is trying to broaden its appeal among traditional Congress voters and the agrarian community ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
