AMRITSAR: Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Mr. Dalwinderjit Singh informed that the Punjab State Election Commission has issued necessary instructions regarding voter identification for the General Elections-2026 of Municipal Councils and Municipal Panchayats. He stated that during the elections, voters will be allowed to use alternative identification documents besides the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) for establishing their identity.
He said that voters possessing EPIC cards will be able to cast their votes using the same. Besides this, voters who do not possess EPIC cards may use Aadhaar Card, Indian Passport, Driving Licence, PAN Card with photograph, MGNREGA Job Card, Ration Card/Blue Card, Arms Licence with photograph, Pension documents, Freedom Fighter Identity Card, Bank or Post Office Passbook with photograph, Health Insurance Smart Card issued by the Ministry of Labour, Official Identity Cards issued to Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly, Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID), Service Identity Cards issued by Central/State Government, PSUs or Public Limited Companies, and Student Identity Cards issued by recognized educational institutions.
The Deputy Commissioner further stated that if any document is issued in the name of the head of the family, other family members may also be identified on the basis of that document, provided their identity is clearly established.
He added that compliance with the instructions issued by the Election Commission will be ensured for conducting the election process in a smooth and transparent manner
He appealed to all voters to carry the necessary identification documents with them on the day of polling to avoid any inconvenience.
Meanwhile As per the notification issued by the Labour Department, Punjab Government, employees working in registered shops and commercial establishments who are registered voters within the jurisdiction of their respective Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats will be granted a paid holiday on May 26, 2026 (Tuesday) in view of the Municipal Elections–2026 being held in Punjab.
Providing information in this regard, Deputy Commissioner Amritsar Mr. Dalwinderjit Singh stated that this decision has been taken under the powers conferred by Sub-Section 1 of Section 10 of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, so that employees may exercise their right to vote freely.
He further said that the notification also clearly mentions that May 26, 2026, shall not be treated as the “Closed Day” in lieu of the weekly off falling between May 24 and May 30, 2026.
The Punjab Government has directed all concerned establishments and officials to ensure strict compliance with these orders.
