BJP Divided Over Satluj: Bittu Contradicts Punjab BJP Chief on Satluj Row
Bittu Says center forms panel to probe OTT Release of Satluj, Not Restore Film
CHANDIGARH: The controversy over Satluj has also exposed differences within the Punjab BJP over the film's release on the OTT platform. While Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon had reportedly favoured allowing the film to remain available for public viewing and questioned its removal, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu took a contrary stand, arguing that the film presents a distorted and one-sided account of Punjab's militancy.
Dhillon had written a letter to the center government to allow the movie to run on OTT and wondered why the movie was taken down. He later claimed that a three member panel is formed to revie the content of movie.
Bittu also sought to clarify reports regarding the Centre's decision to constitute a three-member committee. He said the panel was not formed to reconsider the film's release but to examine how the movie was uploaded on the OTT platform despite the issues raised over its content. According to him, the committee's mandate is to investigate the circumstances under which the film became available online and whether due procedures were followed.
The disagreement has highlighted differing views within the BJP on balancing artistic freedom with concerns over historical interpretation. While one section believes audiences should be allowed to watch the film and form their own opinion, Bittu maintained that any portrayal of Punjab's militancy must also acknowledge the suffering of victims of terrorism and the sacrifices made by security forces, warning that selective narratives could reopen old wounds and create fresh social divisions.
