Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill Writes to Chief Secretary, Directs Fair Probe and Protection of Safai Karamcharis

CHANDIGARH: The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding the alleged clash between the police and protesting sanitation workers and the reported use of force during the ongoing agitation by Safai Karamcharis in Barnala.

NCSK Vice Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill has written to Punjab Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, IAS, directing that the matter be investigated immediately through a fair and transparent inquiry. He has also sought a detailed, fact-based report within seven days.

In his letter, Gill stated that the Commission took cognisance of the matter based on media reports alleging that the police used force to disperse protesting sanitation workers in Barnala. Describing the incident as a matter of serious concern, he said Safai Karamcharis constitute one of the most vulnerable sections of society, and safeguarding their rights is a constitutional responsibility of the government and the administration, in accordance with the directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court.

He emphasised that all allegations relating to the excessive use of force or violation of the rights of sanitation workers must be investigated in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner.

The Commission further stated that it would also examine the role of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Barnala, and the district police within its jurisdiction. The Chief Secretary has been requested to direct the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, to submit a comprehensive report within seven days covering the circumstances of the incident, the alleged use of force and all related facts.

Gill also expressed the expectation that the rights, dignity and safety of Safai Karamcharis would be fully protected. He said that if any official is found guilty during the inquiry, strict action should be taken in accordance with the law. He further urged the Punjab Government to initiate constructive dialogue with representatives of the sanitation workers to ensure an early and peaceful resolution of the ongoing agitation.

In his communication, the Vice Chairman expressed confidence that the Punjab Chief Secretary would treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that the dignity, safety and constitutional rights of Safai Karamcharis are protected at all costs. The Commission reiterated that it would not tolerate any compromise on the rights or dignity of sanitation workers and, if necessary, would continue to monitor the matter closely.
