Maximum power demand touched 12114 MW in April

CHANDIGARH: The power demand in Punjab touched 12114 MW for the first time on April 25 amidst power cuts as heat waves continued pushing the day temperature above 40 *C.
The power supply by the PSPCL was 2124 lakh units (LU) against demand of 2321 LU with an official shortage of 197 LU . Last year in April maximum demand of 11274 MW was on April 30 with a supply of 2145 LU.
As per PSPCL officials,the power supply of 2124 LU consisted of 372.85 LU from states own thermal plants,96.71 LU from Hydro plants . Rajpura thermal supplied 297.64 LU and Talwandi Sabo supplied 339.92 LU. The short term power purchase was 324.50 LU. The export under banking arrangement was around 230 LU.
The official power cuts in rural areas varied from 7 to 8.5 hours depending upon the area. In the urban industrial areas it was above 4.5 hours. The actual power cuts in rural and urban areas were more due to unscheduled technical faults and local problems.
The sufficient coal stock at thermal plants and increased water level in Bhakra and Ranjit sagar Dam reservoirs is the bright spot in the scenario.The coal stock at Lehra Mohabbat thermal is 25 days, Ropar Thermal 36 days and 24 days at Goindwal Sahib thermal. In case of private thermal plants Rajpura thermal is 25 days and Talwandi Sabo 17 days.
The reservoir level at Bhakra is 1594.31 feet an increase of 37.21 feet over last year level of 1557.10 feet.t Pong the level is 1334.98 feet whereas it was 1293.73 feet last year.The reservoir level at Ranjit Sagar Dam is 518.34 meters up by 17.71 meters down from last year level of 500.61 meters.
With heat waves gripping major parts of the country the maximum power demand touched 256 GW, a new record, earlier it was 249.9 GW on May 30,2024. In the northern region the maximum demand was 71217 MW with UP demand of 26032 MW and Punjab demand of 12114 MW.
