Around Two Dozen Migrant Families Quit BJP, Join Congress in Phagwara

PHAGWARA: The Congress received a political boost in the Phagwara Assembly constituency on Saturday as around two dozen migrant families announced their decision to leave the BJP and join the Congress in the presence of local MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal.

Welcoming the new entrants, MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, a former IAS officer, inducted Mohan Kumar Yadav, Moti Lal Mehato, Bhagwan Das Mehato, Anuj Singh, Nageshwar Thapar, Harvinder Thapar, Narayan Mehato, Ashay Lal Yadav, Ramesh Yadav, Gani Nath Shah, Ravinder Kumar Yadav, Ram Lakhan, Ravi Sahni, Sagar Singh, Santokh, Bachan Lal, Mahant Kumar Yadav and their family members into the Congress fold.

Addressing the gathering, Dhaliwal briefed the new members about the Congress party’s ideology, principles and policies, stating that the party has always remained committed to safeguarding the interests of all sections of society and strengthening the country’s secular values. He urged the newly inducted families to actively work towards expanding the party’s base among the migrant community and to take the Congress’ policies and programmes to every household in view of the forthcoming elections. He also called upon party workers to intensify organisational activities and begin preparations for the electoral battle.

The families joining the Congress said they had become disillusioned with the policies of the BJP and had decided to support the Congress because of its secular ideology and people-centric programmes. They also expressed their desire to see Rahul Gandhi become the country’s Prime Minister and pledged to work wholeheartedly to strengthen the Congress organisation.

Among those present on the occasion were Block Congress Phagwara Urban president Naresh Bhardwaj, Delegate Member Gurjit Pal Walia, Councillor Sanjeev Bugga, Mahila Congress Urban president Ranjeet Kaur Rani, Naresh Gangar, Councillor Anita Rani, Ashok Sandhi, Sohan Singh, Malkiat Kaur, Harsh Sharma, Harbans Lal, Kamaljit Sahni and Jagjivan Sandhi.
