AMRITSAR: Sri Akhand Path Sahib was started today at Sri Akal Takht Sahib in connection with the annual martyrdom ceremony to be held on June 6 to pay homage and respect to the Singhs, Singhnis and children who were martyred during the military attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib by the then Congress government in June 1984.
On the occasion of the starting of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Giani Tek Singh and other prominent personalities were present.
Meanwhile, while talking to the media, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, said that the first week of June is extremely painful for the Sikh mentality. In the first week of June in 1984, the then Congress government had inflicted deep wounds on the Sikh community by launching a military attack on the Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib and other Gurdwaras, which the community can never forget.
While many martyrs were martyred in this massacre, the holy Bir of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was also injured due to bullet injuries.
He said that every year in memory of the massacre, a function is held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib to pay tribute to the martyrs.
While talking to the media, Advocate Dhami also demanded the release of the imprisoned Sikhs. He said that Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and other Sikhs had walked the path of struggle against the atrocities committed against the Sikhs and have been detained in jails for almost three decades. The government should immediately decide to commute the sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and release the imprisoned Singhs.
