MOHALI: Taking strong notice of misleading news published in some vernacular news papers quoting that DNA of cows was being destroyed by using sexed semen, The Punjab Senior Vets Association has in a meeting held here today strongly condemned the said pseudo scientist for spreading false claims amongst the farmers.
Former Joint Director Animal Husbandry Punjab and member Punjab State Veterinary Council Dr Gurinder Singh Walia said it was very strange to see that how, a farmer leader of caliber of Balbir Singh Rajewal who was very intelligent and always talks on logic, could be befooled by a so called scientist. Dr Walia said the farmer leaders should have checked his antecedents before holding a press conference.
Former Chief Executive Officer of Punjab Gau Sewa Commission Dr Nitin Kumar Gupta and former Director Animal Husbandry Punjab Dr Sanjeev Khosla said by using sexed semen in cows, female calves will be borne thereby boosting milk production and economy of the farmers. They said that sexed semen technology was being used in many parts of the world. It holds greater significance in India because under prevention of Cow slaughter act, slaughter of male calves is not allowed so they are left by farmers to roam on the roads which many a times become cause of serious accidents.
Former Deputy Director Statistics Dr Desh Deepak Goyal said it was estimated that there were more than 1.25 lac stray cattle roaming in different towns and villages of the state, who not only spoil the crops of farmers but also cause many fatal accidents daily which is evident from the newspaper reports. Dr Goyal said the Punjab Government must check the spread of quacks in state who were making cows repeat breeders by playing with genitalia of cows.He added that by using sexed semen, the population of male calves will decrease leading to some respite in stray cattle population.
