PAU Becomes Magnet for Young Aspirants; Draws Record Applications

LUDHIANA: Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has recorded a remarkable rise in applications for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the academic session 2026-27, further cementing its reputation as one of India's premier institutions for agricultural and allied education. With more than 7,800 applications received across various academic streams, the university has registered one of its strongest admission seasons in recent years.

The figures point to a growing preference among students for specialised education in agriculture, food sciences, business management, mass communication, and natural resource management. The surge is also indicative of PAU's expanding national footprint, with applicants coming not only from Punjab but from several other states and overseas locations.

Among undergraduate programmes, the Common Entrance Test (CET) attracted 4,258 applicants, reflecting an increase of nearly 22 per cent over the 3,497 applications received last year. The Agriculture Aptitude Test (AAT) for admission to the six-year B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture programme after Class 10 witnessed an even sharper rise, climbing from 849 applications in 2025-26 to 1,104 this year. The Ballowal Saunkhri Entrance Test (BSET) also registered healthy growth, drawing 770 applicants compared to 667 a year ago.

The trend becomes even more significant when viewed in the context of postgraduate education. Several disciplines have attracted applicant pools that are more than twice the number of available seats. Courses such as Food and Nutrition, MBA (Agri-Business), Journalism and Mass Communication, Forestry, Vegetable Science, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Food Processing Technology, and Agricultural Meteorology/Agronomy have emerged as major draws for aspiring students.

The growing interest in specialised and interdisciplinary programmes suggests that students are increasingly seeking careers that combine scientific knowledge, entrepreneurship, sustainability, communication, and technological innovation. This shift reflects changing employment trends and a broader recognition of agriculture as a sector offering diverse professional opportunities beyond conventional farming.

Adding an international dimension to the admissions cycle, the university has received 738 applications from foreign nationals across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The strong overseas response highlights PAU's reputation as a globally recognised centre for agricultural education, research, and innovation.

Describing the rise in applications as a reflection of renewed confidence in the university, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal said students and parents are increasingly acknowledging the value of a PAU education. He attributed the trend to the university's continued emphasis on academic excellence, curriculum modernisation, research leadership, stronger placement avenues, and its enduring connection with rural communities. According to him, the institution remains focused on preparing skilled professionals who can contribute to sustainable agriculture and national development.

Registrar Dr. Rishi Pal Singh (IAS) noted that the strong response across a wide spectrum of disciplines demonstrates PAU's relevance in an evolving educational landscape. He observed that improved admissions processes, broader outreach efforts, and enhanced digital accessibility have made the university more approachable to prospective students. The emphasis on experiential learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement, he added, is resonating strongly with today's youth.

More than a numerical achievement, the current admission response signals growing confidence in an institution that continues to shape future leaders, drive agricultural transformation, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
