AMRITSAR: Australia-based teacher Sunil Sharma, who had returned to Amritsar to sell his property, was allegedly abducted and murdered in a shocking case of family conspiracy linked to a property dispute.
The victim, Punjabi NRI was living in Melbourne and he went missing on May 22 after arriving in India, triggering a police investigation that later uncovered a planned crime involving his own close relatives. According to Amritsar Rural SSP Kanwalpreet Singh, Sunil Sharma’s brother Satish Sharma has been identified as the main accused in the case, while his wife has also been arrested and their son is currently absconding.
Surbhi Sharma daughter of the deceased had made the complaint to the police after her father lost contact with the family.
Police said preliminary investigation suggests that Sunil Sharma was abducted soon after his arrival and was administered sleeping pills before being killed. The motive, as per investigators, was to gain control over ancestral property. Satish Sharma allegedly attempted to sell the property using a forged power of attorney prepared in Ludhiana. During the probe, police also arrested Lakshman Singh, a property dealer, who is alleged to have prepared the fake power of attorney that was used in the attempted illegal transfer of property.
Investigators further stated that during interrogation, accused persons disclosed that after the murder, the body was disposed of in the Beas river at Harike Pattan in an attempt to destroy evidence. Search operations are underway to trace the remains of the deceased. Wife of Satish Sharma has been arrested for destroying the evidence while their son is absconding.
SSP Kanwalpreet Singh said that Satish Sharma is the main conspirator in the case and that all aspects, including forgery of documents and financial transactions, are being thoroughly investigated. Police have registered a case of murder, criminal conspiracy and forgery, while efforts are on to trace the absconding accused and collect further forensic evidence to establish the full chain of events.
