Act is a political conspiracy challenging Guru Granth and Guru Panth-Advocate Dhami
By Amrik Singh
AMRITSAR: Head Granthi Singh Sahib of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Giani Amarjit Singh said that the wording of the “Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026” enacted by the Punjab government is directly desecrating Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
This was stated by Giani Amarjit Singh while addressing a special gathering of preachers, Granthi Singhs of various Gurdwaras, Management Committees and Akhandpathi Sabhas at Teja Singh Samundri Hall located at the Shiromani Committee office under the leadership of Shiromani Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh.
He asked the nation to be aware of this mischievous action of the government and said that using the word store for Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the act passed regarding Sri Guru Granth Sahib is against Panthic sentiments. He said that according to Sikh tradition and etiquette, the words Sukhaasan and Sachkhand Asthan are used to enshrine Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the Jagat Jyot Guru, the wording of which cannot be accepted in any way.
He said that this act of the government will be the reason for keeping the youth away from religious responsibilities, which is never in the interest of the community. He said that some section of the Sikh community should not emotionally support this act in every way.
Addressing the gathering, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that this law passed by the Punjab government is not only a direct interference in Sikh institutions, but is also creating big doubts among the Sikh community. He said that the intention of the government is clear from the fact that its translation in Punjabi is not available in the Punjabi-speaking state itself. After hearing the views of various speakers, the SGPC President said that the “Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026” made by the Punjab government is a political conspiracy to challenge the Guru Granth and the Guru Panth instead of punishing the culprits of sacrilege. Khalsa Panth is in favor of strict punishments for those guilty of desecrating Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and does not oppose any such law that gives strict punishments to those who desecrate, but it is absolutely unacceptable that the government should pave the way for government interference in the affairs of Sikh institutions, Gurdwara committees and the Panth. He said that today's gathering, opposing this political move of the government, has appealed to Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib to give a serious thought to this and give an order, whatever decision will be taken from Sri Akal Takht Sahib will be acceptable to the entire Khalsa Panth.
He said that many words in this act are against Sikh sentiments and keeping in mind the Sikh sentiments, the government should re-examine this law. Necessary amendments should be made after discussing with Sikh institutions under the patronage of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
On this occasion, Shiromani Committee member Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Head Granthi of Gurdwara Bir Baba Buddha Sahib Giani Nishan Singh, Preacher Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Rathore, Manager S. Gurdeep Singh Kang, Bhai Jasmer Singh Chhajla also addressed on behalf of Granthi Sabhas. The stage service was performed by Head Preacher Bhai Sarabjit Singh Dhotian.
