SP Gaurav Toora Says Kapurthala Jail Violence Brought Under Control After Inmate Clash

PHAGWARA: Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora issued a statement regarding the Kapurthala jail episode and told This correspondent that the situation inside the Modern Jail in Kapurthala had been brought under control after a violent clash erupted between two groups of inmates on Saturday evening.

The SSP said the incident began at around 8:30 pm when a fight broke out between rival inmate groups inside the jail premises. Jail officials initially attempted to intervene and pacify the inmates, but the situation escalated after some prisoners allegedly attacked the jail staff and vandalised property inside the prison complex.

According to police officials, nearly 200 to 250 inmates allegedly created unrest inside the jail, damaged property and attempted to climb the fenced boundary wall, triggering panic among the authorities. Some inmates also allegedly set fire to their belongings inside the barracks, leading to further tension within the prison premises.

To prevent the situation from worsening, jail authorities reportedly fired rounds in the air as a precautionary measure. Additional police force from Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts was rushed to the jail to assist in restoring order. Police personnel managed to push the inmates back into the barracks and prevented any escape attempt.

Three inmates sustained injuries during the violence and were shifted to Civil Hospital, Kapurthala, for treatment. Officials confirmed that no further injuries were reported after the situation was stabilised.

DIG Jalandhar range Naveen Singla later stated that the situation had been fully brought under control and that no inmate had escaped from the jail. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident after conducting a headcount of all inmates lodged in the prison. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
