Lawyers' Agitation Against LADC Policy to Be Taken Nationwide: Advocate Rohit Sharma

PHAGWARA: Bar Association Phagwara Vice-President Advocate Rohit Sharma, has extended full support to the "Punjab Ki Awaaz" campaign launched by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) policy, stating that the movement would provide a nationwide platform for safeguarding the independence and dignity of the legal profession.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Advocate Sharma said the proposed outreach initiative, under which bar associations from Punjab will coordinate with their counterparts in Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, is a timely and commendable step towards building a united national movement against the policy.

He observed that the legal fraternity's concerns over the LADC policy are not confined to Punjab alone, as the issue has wider implications for the autonomy of advocates and the independence of the legal profession across the country. "Any policy that undermines the professional independence of advocates cannot be accepted," he asserted.

Advocate Sharma further said that the legal fraternity is fighting not merely for its own professional interests but also for preserving the fairness, credibility and constitutional values of the justice delivery system. "An independent Bar is one of the strongest pillars of an independent judiciary. Protecting the legal profession ultimately serves the interests of every citizen seeking fair justice," he remarked.

He expressed confidence that a coordinated nationwide campaign involving bar associations from different states would strengthen the movement and ensure that the concerns of advocates are effectively conveyed before the appropriate authorities.

Reiterating the commitment of the Bar Association Phagwara towards issues affecting advocates, Sharma said the association has always stood firmly with the legal fraternity and would continue to participate in every democratic and collective decision taken in the larger interest of the profession.

He also appealed to advocates across the country to rise above individual differences and work together to make the nationwide campaign a success, emphasizing that unity among lawyers would be the key to protecting the dignity, independence and future of the legal profession.
