CHANDIGARH: Welcoming the historic announcements made by Sri Akal Takht Sahib at Harike Pattan in memory of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra and thousands of victims of the violence and disappearances during the Punjab's peak militancy period, the IndUS Canada Foundation (ICF) has announced a contribution of Rs. 1 crore towards the development of the proposed Shaheedi Pattan Memorial.
Vikram Bajwa, Indus Canada Foundation (ICF) said that the foundation fully supports the decisions announced by the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, including declaring Harike Pattan as "Shaheedi Pattan", constructing a permanent memorial at the site and documenting the records of those regarded as martyrs and persons allegedly killed or cremated as "unclaimed" during the 1982–1995 period.
Announcing the Foundation's commitment, Vikram Bajwa affirmed that ICF would spearhead a global fundraising campaign by mobilising its extensive international network of Sikh organisations, gurdwaras and community leaders across the United States, Canada, UK, Australia and other countries. He further announced that a dedicated global fundraising website will be launched shortly to connect NRIs and the worldwide Sikh diaspora with the Shaheedi Pattan Memorial initiative. He expressed confidence that this collective effort would not only generate significant financial support but also unite the worldwide Sikh diaspora in preserving and commemorating this historic site of unparalleled religious and cultural significance.
"This memorial is not merely about preserving history; it is about acknowledging sacrifice, fostering collective healing and inspiring future generations. The Punjabi diaspora is committed to helping heal the wounds of the past while contributing towards a stronger, more united and harmonious future for Punjab," Bajwa said.
