CHANDIGARH : As I see around so many relationships breaking around. Children leaving old parents, divorces happening, siblings fighting for properties and friends becoming strangers.
I wonder do we have the power to rule our thoughts? Are we in control of how we think?
A lot has happened in my life . Saw highs and lows of life. Made me wonder, did I have control over it ? Did I listen to Demons in my head. How do we react when there is happiness or pain?
A lot is going in our mind and its complex processes even manipulates our emotions.
If we had a heart and soul of a lizard, we would not experience any emotions.
It is said that emotions drive 80./. of choices Humans make, so objectivity only holds 20./. incase you are angry, lonely or tired. If a decision is made during these three emotions, it is going to be 100./. In the wrong direction.
In Greek myth, many of the ills that plagued mankind were creatures of emotion, such as revenge, spite, and envy. Released by the goddess Pandora, they sought to torment the world.
In olden days physicians believed that different organs controlled certain moods. Happiness, for example, came from the heart, anger from the liver, and fear from the kidneys.
And the present spiritual gurus think on the same page.
We have our Yoga teachers guiding us to control our emotions with breathing exercises, Art of living gurus teach us to detach ourselves and Buddhism chanting to achieve what we dream for.
In the English language, there are more than 400 words assigned to emotions and sentiments.
Being a fashion stylist I completely agree with this recent study, it suggests a strong correlation between wearing certain clothes and emotional states.
For example, it revealed that women who are depressed or sad are more likely to wear baggy tops, sweatshirts, or jeans. Women who had more positive emotions were more likely to wear a favorite dress or jewelry and generally look nicer.
Sometimes some stronger women make it from negative emotion to positive mindset just by dressing well.
Any spiritual class I attended the main key to control emotions was to tell yourself, " this will pass." When faced with anger or sadness. The key is to start believing in it. As life becomes normal and we get involved in our routine we forget to practice the belief.
Working with Non profit organizations, I often come across a parent who has been left in old age home by their children, I listen to their anger, their sadness and when I ask them to practice with me by saying, " this will pass." I'm often reminded by them that even if it passes time is running short, they will be gone before " this will pass" So then I wonder how do these demons leave our head.
One of Buddha's teaching was, that it wasn't important to find out what set your house on fire. It's only important to get out of the burning house as fast as possible. Do we have the strength to control our mind in such a way?
When I was in school and argue with my mother for something, my father always said," if you remain quite for ten minutes, then you are a winner for next ten hours."I worked on it and slowly understood that my lesson in it was patience and tolerance makes you go a long way.
As I grew up met lots of different people, there are some who tell lies, some shout and some argue so my remaining quiet just made me cut off from these people. They thought I'm being stubborn or not responding as strongly as they are.
I don't know if I'm a winner or a lost soul. I still remain quiet and believe someday my ten minutes will go a long way. In a way some demons do get killed in those ten minutes.
So if we all remain quiet for ten minutes and give a hug aka Munna Bhai maybe we can kill these demons in our head.
Children are the best example, I often see my ten year old daughter having a small fight with her friend in the school recess but within few minutes they are hugging and playing together. There is a child in all of us but Ego, Anger, Hatred, Jealousy, Resentment kills it. If we all keep that child alive in us, world would be full of giggles and laughter.
I often dream a world full of love, am I being a dreamer? Then let it be. If we can all let go of grudges we hold and look at nice things done by someone we are angry at, look at good and discard bad, accept the relation whole heartedly and cherish the memories made, yes world will be a happier place and we will love. So,till then I wear my rose tinted glasses and see all the happiness in the world, give hugs to strangers and laugh at my mistakes.
I promise myself I will let go of my demons, if I try and spread the touch maybe ten minutes of tolerance will kill demons everywhere. And so I dream, as I breathe killing demons one by one. So can you.
