AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly criticized the indifferent policy being adopted by the Government of India on the issue of the release of the imprisoned Sikhs and termed this approach of the government as a violation of human rights, affront to the values of justice and injustice to the Sikhs.
Advocate Dhami, who reached the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee office today, said that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has been continuously making efforts on this serious issue of the Sikhs for a long time, but the negative attitude of the Central Government has become an obstacle in this.
He said that in the past, a five-member committee was formed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib in the case of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and other imprisoned Sikhs, but the sad aspect is that the Prime Minister did not consider it appropriate to give time to the committee representing Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest seat of the Sikhs.
Advocate Dhami said that several efforts were made to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard, but after more than a year and a half, the government has given a disappointing response.
SGPC President said that according to the information sent to the SGPC by the Central Government recently, the time requested by the five-member committee of Sri Akal Takht Sahib regarding the detained Singhs in December 2023 to meet the Prime Minister was closed on March 21, 2025, saying that this matter is under consideration by the Union Home Ministry.
He said that if this matter is under consideration by the Union Home Ministry, then why is the government not taking a decision in the case of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana despite the orders of the Supreme Court. He said that earlier also the Prime Minister's Office had said that the Home Minister should be discussed regarding this matter, but the Home Ministry also did not give any positive response.
Advocate Dhami said that the cases of Bhai Rajoana and other imprisoned Singhs are linked to Sikh sentiments and they have also served long sentences, so the Government of India should take a decision without delay.
He said that it is the responsibility of governments to implement the rule of justice uniformly for all and political approach on this is not right. Therefore, the government should fulfill its responsibility by giving justice to the imprisoned Singhs so that there is no feeling of distrust among the Sikhs.
On this occasion, Shiromani Committee members Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Gurmeet Singh Booh, OSD Satbir Singh Dhami were also present
