Drug addiction in Punjab has quadrupled under AAP: PPCC president Raja Warring
· How many SSPs, Commissioners have been held responsible for drug deaths: Warring
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today said that the problem of drug addiction in Punjab had quadrupled during the Aam Aadmi Party government. He said, what to speak of finishing the problem, under the AAP, it has assumed dangerous proportions with every family either affected or apprehensive of their kids falling prey to the scourge.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhawan here today, PCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring accompanied by Manifesto Committee Chairman Dr Amar Singh and former minister Balbir Singh Sidhu posed four questions to the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asking him, if the ‘Yudh Nashya Virudh’ on which the AAP government spent crores of rupees, was really successful, how come there are regular deaths due to drug consumption.
He reminded the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police that they had announced that after May 2025, every district police chief will be held responsible for the drug deaths in their respective districts. He asked, how many district police chiefs have been held responsible for so many drug related deaths that have taken place since then.
The PCC president, quoting extensive media reports, said that the drug problem was worst in the districts of Bathinda, Mansa, Ferozepur and Fazilka. He asked, who was patronizing and protecting the supply chain and who was responsible for it, whether the area SSP or local ruling party leaders.
He also said that the government had claimed to break the supply chain within three months, but the fact is that it has not been able to do it in five years. In fact, he added, the supply chain of the drugs has further got stronger with patronage from the government.
Warring revealed that the drug problem was so serious that a female athlete in Mansa had sold her 6 months old baby to buy drugs.
He disclosed that between August 14 to 20, 7-8 drug related deaths had taken place in the Malwa region including a 16 year old boy. He said, these were only the reported cases as most of the parents try to hide such deaths due to the social stigma.
Replying to a question about the National Human Rights Commission taking cognizance of the allegations against Chief Minister’s wife that she had demanded Rs 5 crores to hush up a rape case and the Enforcement Directorate’s letter to the DGP asking for registration of a case against Chief Minister’s OSD, Warring said that there are no two opinions that the corruption has crossed all limits in Punjab and it was happening very much in front Bhagwant Mann’s eyes.
He alleged that there was a secret understanding between the BJP at the centre and the AAP in the state as BJP wants the AAP to help it in Gujarat and in return BJP will help the AAP in Punjab. He asked, otherwise why would the ED write a letter to the DGP and not act on its own.
He pointed out, in case of the Congress leaders they were directly summoned and questioned and even arrested at the first summoning.
He also referred to Punjab Minister Harjot Bains, demanding the CBI probe against him. He said had there not been an understanding why would Bains demand a probe by the same CBI which had arrested Kejriwal and whom the AAP accused of working at the behest of the BJP. Something has certainly changed now, he remarked.
He said, Chief Minister, the DGP and the ED all need to clarify their respective position on the serious issue of corruption in Punjab and the action being taken in this regard.
Replying to a question on Haryana MP Deepinder Hooda praising Sajjan Kumar, convicted and sentenced for life for killing Sikhs during the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in 1984, Warring said, no sane person whether a Sikh or a non-Sikh can forget the pain and trauma of 1984. He said Kumar had duly been punished by the law and what Hooda said was his personal opinion and not of the Congress party. He pointed out, Rahul Gandhi had time and again expressed his grief over the tragedy of 1984.
