PHAGWARA: In a dynamic forum aimed at shaping the future of global architecture and design, Lovely Professional University (LPU) hosted an International Conference on Product Design. The two-day event, organized by LPU’s School of Product Design, brought together leading architects, researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and design thinkers to share ideas, challenges, and innovative practices that are influencing the future of design worldwide. The even focused discussions on sustainable design, materials, and circular economy practices further emphasized the global perspectives and evolving trends shaping the field.
The chief guest of the event, LPU Pro-Chancellor Dr. Rashmi Mittal, shared how product design is integral to everyday life. Dr. Mittal spoke about the significance of designing products that are not only economically viable and sustainable but also consumer-specific, thereby contributing to both practicality and environmental consciousness in the design process. She also inspired the emerging architects and designers to recognize their critical role in driving the future of global design, encouraging them to be bold in their vision and impactful in their contributions.
In a virtual session, Gagandeep Singh, Structural Analysis Engineer at Boeing, United States shared insights on the critical role materials play in aerospace design. He discussed the use of titanium alloys, Kevlar, polymers, and composite materials to ensure safety and efficiency in aviation. Gagandeep’s work on aircraft doors offered a unique glimpse into how design and engineering merge in the aviation industry.
Dr. Srinivasan Venkataraman from IIT Delhi took the stage to discuss the intersection of creativity, novelty, value, and utility in design. He explored how nature, such as the lotus leaf influencing basin designs, can inspire innovative product concepts. Srinivasan also highlighted the importance of intellectual property, patents, and prior art in the development of new products.
Toshit Dhawan, Associate Vice President and Head of Procurement at Red Chief Sports, shared valuable insights into the footwear design industry in India. His session focused on how aesthetics, ergonomics, and functionality come together to create successful footwear. He outlined the process from research and prototyping to final product, underscoring the importance of thoughtful material selection.
The conference also explored a wide range of topics, from affordability and frugality to ergonomics and aerospace design. Dr. Atul Singla, Head of the Lovely School of Architecture and Design, emphasized on the essential role of vision and leadership in design. The discussions reinforced a shared vision: it is time for India not only to consume global designs but to create them.
Other dignitaries present included Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor of LPU, who emphasized the importance of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration in all fields, even beyond architecture and design. Dr. Parag Anand from SPA New Delhi introduced a psychological perspective on design, exploring how human perception influences design outcomes. Dr. Prabir Sarkar from IIT Ropar highlighted the importance of design standards in producing globally competitive products, while Saptarshi Kolay from IIT Roorkee discussed the history and evolution of design thinking, shedding light on how the discipline has developed over time.
