CHANDIGARH: The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Pushpanjali Trust, today organised an interactive session for postgraduate students and research scholars on the theme "Inclusive Living for Persons with Mental Illness: A Human Rights Concern."
The session was coordinated by Dr. Upneet Kaur Mangat, Faculty and Former Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties. Dr. Mangat delivered an insightful address highlighting that mental health is not only the concern of those directly affected but a collective societal responsibility. She emphasised that inclusive living is a fundamental human right and urged participants to contribute actively towards building a more compassionate society.
The keynote resource person, Mr. Sudhir Kumar, a social worker from Pushpanjali Trust, who shared valuable perspectives on the Trust’s mission and its rights-based approach to mental health and disability issues. He introduced participants to the work of Citizens for Inclusive Living Society, which advocates for the rights of persons with mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities in Chandigarh.
Mr. Sudhir provided a detailed overview of the Group Home model—residential living spaces where individuals with mental health challenges live with professional support—and elaborated on the pending operational issues faced by the Group Home at Sector 31, Chandigarh. These include the demand for a high security deposit, shortage of trained staff, and the urgent need for establishing day-care and vocational units. His presentation sparked an engaging discussion among students, several of whom expressed keen interest in volunteering and internship opportunities with the Trust.
The session also featured Ms. Pulkita Wadhwa, Counsellor and Mental Health Advisor at Panjab University, who sensitised the audience about the mental health support services available on campus. She emphasised the importance of timely intervention for mental health concerns and introduced the university’s Mental Health Club, which actively promotes well-being initiatives for students and staff. She also shared emergency helpline numbers for immediate support.
