LUDHIANA: The Department of Bioinformatics, College of Animal Biotechnology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, has organized four days of e-training on Bioinformatics.
This training was sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of GoI funded project on parentage determination in dogs and aimed to promote online learning and to impart proficiency in bioinformatics to the trainees from diverse academic backgrounds. 100 trainees from 18 states of India and 2 international participants were apprised about the different aspects of molecular data analysis. Besides the theoretical talks, the entire training session had strong practical components with detailed hands-on sessions.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU congratulated the organizing team and emphasized that capacity building in bioinformatics and analyzing parentage data using molecular methods is the need of the hour . Dr. Arun K. Rawat, Senior Advisor to DBT in his inaugural keynote address emphasized on identification and exploring the possibility of canine-parentage based markers. He further stressed that research on canines would be a stimulus for the entrepreneurs and the start-up companies leading the country towards “Atmanirbhar Bharat” i.e. self-reliant India. He mentioned that Sh. Narendra Modi, P M of India also encouraged to rear indigenous dog species.
Dr. J. P. S. Gill, Director of Research informed that the training has been sponsored by the Project Monitoring Unit of Canine Research Center and Networking (CRCN-GADVASU) under DBT network research project entitled “Parentage Determination and Cytogenetic Profiling in Dogs”. Dr Gill and Dr. Ramneek, Dean, College of Dairy Science and Technology emphasized on creating laboratory facilities for the parentage determination as there is no such dedicated laboratory available in Northern India. The principal investigator Dr. C. S. Mukhopadhyay, and the co-ordinators of the training Dr. P. P. Dubey and Dr. Anuj Tyagi mentioned that this training focused on fundamental aspects of bioinformatics and biocomputational analyses. Dr. Yashpal Singh Malik, Dean, College of Animal Biotechnology congratulated the organizers and indicated that more exhaustive capacity-building training programs will be organized once the lab facilities will be developed. The program-coordinator of the DBT-CRCN-projects, Dr. S. K. Uppal, the Dean Post Graduate Studies, proposed the vote of thanks during the valedictory program..
