On the occasion, the NSS volunteers also took out a massive rally while highlighting the “havoc” created by burning of farm residues especially stubble burning.

Using placards, banners, posters and other demonstrative means and one-on-one interactive sessions , the participants sought to educate farmers on Straw management technologies .

DSW-cum- Estate Officer, Dr Satyavan Rampal, said that the university experts were doing their best to flag the issue by educating the farmers. Dr. V. K. Gandotra, Dr. H.K. Verma, Dr. Rampal and other officials of varsity flagged off the rally.

Dr. H K Verma, Director Extension Education, stated “we have been not only consistently appealing but imparting training to farmers about Straw and crop residue management so as to avoid any sort of stubble burning. Through literature and audio visual aids farmers are being regularly informed as to how they can sustain economically too by availing benefits of various  Government schemes on purchase of Paddy Straw management machines”, while appealing farmers to manage crop residue to better soil health.

Addressing the rally Dr. JPS Gill, Director Research, said the NSS volunteers were imparted training as to how they can counsel the farmers so as to exhort them not to opt for burning of paddy residue in their fields. University’s NSS Programme Coordinator Mrs. Nidhi Sharma said that there was utmost need to educate farmers about the ill-effects of the large-scale stubble burning as the coercive measures being adopted by the governments alone would not yield desired results. More than 100 NSS volunteers from university’s three constituent colleges - College of Fisheries, College of Animal Biotechnology and College of Dairy Science and Technology participated in the rally.
The rallies in various villages were supervised by Dr. CS Mukhopadhyay, NSS Programme Officer, College of Animal Biotechnology and Mr Venus Bansal from College of Dairy Science and Technology.
