CHANDIGARH: Dr. Rakesh Tuli, an eminent scientist of the country, has been conferred upon 10th Professor SR Kashyap Oration Award in the Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Prof. Kamal Jit Singh, Chairperson, Department of Botany briefed about the award that has been instituted in the revered memory of an eminent Botanist Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, an alumnus of the Department, through a lecture corpus nucleated by his daughter, Ms. Kamini Kaushal, a famous actress, and supported by Department of Botany. The award is conferred on the renowned scientists of the country every year. Amongst the earlier recipients of the awards include the recently awarded Bharat Ratna, Late Prof. M.S. Swaminathan.
Dr. Tuli in his award lecture enlightened the progress in the areaof “Changing Landscape of Botany: From Plant Diversity to Designing plants for Future” in India. He made pioneering contributions through catalysing new ideas in regulation of gene expression, designing and synthesis of genes, prospecting lower plants for discovering novel genes for applications in agriculture, and for establishing approaches for genetic modification through transgenes and gene editing in several crop plants. The lecture was presided over by the Guest of honour Professor Arun K. Grower, former Vice-chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The event was presided over by Professor Y. P. Verma, Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh, who lauded the tremendous efforts of Dr. Rakesh Tuli. Dr. Verma shared many past experiences with Dr. Tuli that he is a real renaissance personality having expertise in many fields, and hoped that the university would be able to reach the top most university of the world with involvement of renowned scientist like Dr. Tuli with the Panjab University.
