Pushpa Gujral Science City Celebrates World Water Day
PHAGWARA: Pushpa Gujral Science City observed World Water Day with a special focus on the theme "Glacier Preservation, " highlighting the vital role glaciers play in sustaining life and regulating the water cycle. The event aimed to raise awareness about the alarming effects of climate change and the urgent need for action to combat the accelerating melting of glaciers.

Around 100 school students and teachers participated in this meaningful event, which featured engaging competitions, including a street play and a caption contest. These activities emphasized the importance of glaciers and the immediate need to protect them.

Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Pushpa Gujral Science City, stated that as global temperatures rise, glaciers are rapidly shrinking, leading to unpredictable shifts in the water cycle. He pointed out that the melting of glaciers is contributing to dangerous phenomena such as floods, landslides, and rising sea levels, all of which threaten both communities and ecosystems worldwide. Dr. Grover urged a collective response to these challenges and emphasized the critical role of youth in safeguarding glaciers as part of broader efforts to address climate change and the global water crisis.

Er. Lupinder Kumar, Sub-Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Jalandhar, delivered an expert talk on sustainable water management. Er. Kumar highlighted the concerning water scenario in Punjab, revealing a stark disparity between water demand and availability. With a total water demand of 66.12 BCM and an available supply of only 52.85 BCM, the region faces a significant deficit of 13.27 BCM. He called for urgent and practical solutions to bridge this gap and ensure sustainable water usage for future generations. He also stressed the importance of rainwater harvesting to improve groundwater recharge and surface water storage, urging individuals to adopt water-efficient practices and take responsibility for water conservation.

The event concluded with a collective call to action, emphasizing that water security is not only a governmental responsibility but also a shared duty among all individuals, requiring immediate and sustained efforts to preserve this precious resource.
