MOHALI: The Department of Physics at Rayat Bahra University organised an educational visit for M.Sc. (Astronomy and Astrophysics) students to attend the Winter School 2025 at the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, the Observatory of Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru.
Dr M S Mehta head department of physics said that This five-day intensive training programme brought together 40 students from across the country, providing them with hands-on experience in solar observations.
The participants explored various solar phenomena, including solar atmosphere, interior, magnetohydrodynamics, solar dynamo, solar cycles, flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), along with an in-depth study of the Aditya-L1 mission, India's first space-based solar observatory.
In addition to theoretical learning, students engaged in practical sessions on solar observations and spectro-polarimetric techniques, enhancing their understanding of the Sun’s magnetic fields.
One of the most anticipated events was the night sky watch, where participants enjoyed a comprehensive discussion with renowned scientists involved in rigorous research work at the observatory on spectro-polarimetry and magnetic fields.
Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chancellor of RBU and Chairman of Rayat Bahra Group of Institutions, said the Physics Department has been dedicated to imparting skills and knowledge to students since its inception and this educational programme was in line with this commitment.
