AMRITSAR: Celebrating Constitution Day, the Department of Laws at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, organized a Free Legal Aid Camp and a Guest Lecture titled “Constitutional Right to Justice in India: The Role and Impact of Lok Adalats.” This event also marked the inauguration of the first issue of the department’s new student magazine, a platform designed to reflect the creativity and voices of law students.
The event welcomed Sh. Amardeep Singh Bains, Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Amritsar, as the distinguished guest speaker. The program commenced with a welcome address that highlighted Constitution Day’s significance in upholding democratic values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Dr. Meenu Verma, Head of the Department of Laws, warmly greeted Sh. Bains and presented him with a token of appreciation.
In his insightful lecture, Sh. Amardeep Singh Bains discussed the pivotal role of Lok Adalats in providing accessible justice to all, focusing on their impact as a cost-effective, efficient means of dispute resolution that greatly benefits underprivileged communities. He also emphasized the importance of legal aid services in empowering individuals to fully realize their constitutional rights. The Guest Lecture was coordinated by Dr. Shikha Dhiman, Faculty Coordinator, who ensured the smooth organization of the event.
A Free Legal Aid Camp was also held, coordinated by Dr. Manjit Singh. Under faculty supervision, law students offered legal guidance to attendees, reinforcing the university’s commitment to community service and legal awareness. Dr. Shikha Dhiman also oversaw the organization of the legal aid camp, ensuring an enriching and seamless experience for all participants.
Adding to the significance of the day, Dr. Meenu Verma unveiled the cover page of the Department of Laws’ new Student Magazine, which will soon be available on the university’s website. This magazine, with Dr. Meenu Verma as Editor in Chief, Dr. Bimaldeep Singh and Dr. Shikha Dhiman as Faculty Editors, and student editors Sakshi Sehgal, Soumya Khanna, and Khushi, aims to showcase students’ talents, insights, and academic achievements, fostering an intellectual and creative space within the department.
The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Shikha Dhiman, who expressed gratitude to Sh. Bains for his enlightening lecture and to all attendees for their participation. Through initiatives that blend academic rigor with societal engagement, the Department of Laws at Guru Nanak Dev University reaffirms its commitment to nurturing the next generation of legal minds and celebrating the ideals of the Constitution.
