LUDHIANA: The College of Animal Biotechnology and Project Monitoring Unit of the Department of Biotechnology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) has organized a 21 days of e-training on “Skill Development on Advanced Bioinformatics in Genome Analysis of Livestock and Pets” among faculty, scientists, researchers, and PG students.
The training was sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology-funded project on ‘parentage determination and cytogenetic profiling in dogs’ . 263 trainees attended this online training program. Eight of these trainees were foreign nationals from USA, Poland and African countries. Other trainees represented 27 states of India. The training mainly covered hands-on programming languages (R, Python, Perl), advanced bioinformatics tools, and pipelines for big-data analysis. Experts from India and abroad shared their skills with the trainees.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University, congratulated the organizers and underscored the importance of skill development in biocomputatiponal analyses in the era of big data, artificial intelligence and biotechnology. Eminent scientists Dr. Abhijeet Mitra, the Director of ICAR-CIRC, Meerut, Dr. Subeer Majumdar, Director, NIAB, Hyderabad, Professor James Reecy, Director, Bioinformatics Unit, ISU, USA narrated the importance of bioinformatics and its applications in science and technology. Dr. JPS Gill, Director of Research emphasized that GADVASU has always played a critical role in capacity building in various advanced areas. Now it is the high-time to garner skills for in silico data analysis. The program-coordinator of the DBT-CRCN-projects, Dr. S. K. Uppal, Dean Post Graduate Studies, applauded the whole team and congratulated the trainees upon successful completion of the training program. Dr. Yashpal Singh Malik, Dean of the College of Animal Biotechnology indicated that ‘inclusive teaching’ facilities and suitable research laboratories for the training of interested students and teachers on bioinformatics are being developed in the College. He also invited proposals for organizing small tailored training modules from different institutions. The principal investigator of the project, Dr. C. S. Mukhopadhyay highlighted the key modules covered under the training and narrated how it will be of great use to the trainees to make them self-reliant in bioinformatics data analyses.
