CHANDIGARH: Education Department, Punjab, today announced the results of 5th and 8th standard examinations. A total of 2, 14, 053 students appeared in 5th standard exams out of which 42, 128 scored 80 percent while 1, 44, 049 students scored more than 60 percent marks.
District Fazilka scored top position in 5th standard results where 82.50 percent students scored more than 60 percent marks. Similarly, a total of 2, 21, 716 students took 8th standard exams out of whom 24, 567 scored 80 percent while 1, 38, 175 scored more than 60 percent marks. In terms of 8th standard results, Gurdaspur district bagged top rank where 76.88 percent students scored more than 60 percent marks.
Education Minister, Punjab, Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema congratulated both students and teachers who showed better results. He also announced that commendation letters would be awarded to teachers of top 100 schools who have performed well. Apart from this, Dr. Cheema has formed a committee for 8th standard results under SCERT Director, Mr. Sukhdev Singh Kahlon and for 5th standard results under DPI (Elementary Education) Mrs. Pankaj Sharma and sought a report by 15th April. The committees would thoroughly evaluate the results and give suggestions for further improvement. Dr. Cheema also said that Punjab has become the first state in the country to conduct 5th and 8th standard exams and SCERT besides all District Education Officers (DEO’s) deserve a pat on the back for declaring results in record time of 14 days after conclusion of exams.
Dr. Cheema further divulged that under Right To Education Act, students scoring less than 33 percent marks cannot be failed and these students would go to next class with ’E’ grade. He also said that such students would be given special attention and extra classes would be arranged for them to improve their educational score.
On the occasion, a spokesman further elaborated that it was for the first time that SCERT had conducted the examination independently and papers were set at State level. Exam centers were also fixed at other schools and supervising staff deputed also belonged to outside schools. Papers were checked through table marking by teachers of other schools. The purpose behind this whole exercise conducted for the first time was to have an estimate of teachers as well as students performance in order to improve upon poor performance.
