CHANDIGARH: The opposition parties in Punjab have launched an offensive against AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and demanded a probe into alleged nexus between Police-drugs and prostitution running in the state.

The attack by opposition has put the Bhagwant Mann government in tight spot as the developments after arrest of a lady constable with drugs has made a dent in the so called 'Yudh Nashian Virudh (War against drugs) launched by AAP government. The arrest of lady constable Amandeep Kaur has opened a pandora's box. She allegedly named an IPS officer posted Commissioner of Police in an important district and wanted to talk to the said officer when police intercepted her. The reports said that the police party snatched two iPhones she was carrying and didn't allow her to talk to the IPS officer. Heroin weighing 17.71 gm was recovered from the cop who was into the drug smuggling for years.

Partap Singh Bajwa CLP leader of Congress has demanded a probe by NIA to expose the nexus between police-drug smugglers and the prostitutes and targeted the Chief Minister for not acting against the IPS officer who is considered his blue eyed boy. Bajwa said it was shameful that CM was silent on such serious developments.

Drug racket

“This issue does not stand in isolation, ” the letter states, pointing to previous controversies involving IPS officer Raj Jit Singh and Inspector Inderjit Singh, both of whom are absconding in a drug trafficking case. It also references the recent arrest and dismissal of a woman constable, Amandeep Kaur, posted in Bathinda, who was allegedly caught with heroin and believed to be part of the same illegal network, Ladhar wrote in his letter.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira, MLA and former Leader of the Opposition in Punjab, has called for an independent and impartial investigation— preferably by the CBI — into the alleged nexus between certain police officials and drug trafficking networks in the state. The issue has gained further traction due to the circulation of a leaked audio clip, purportedly implicating the same senior IPS officer who was named by the lady cop.

A former senior bureaucrat Sucha Ram Ladhar President BJP SC Morcha Punjab has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged nexus involving senior IPS officers, drug trafficking, and prostitution.

Prostitution

The Punjab government and the Punjab Police have not denied or confirmand the content of the viral audio. Neither any probe is ordered to establish authenticity of the audio recording. The allegations come at a time when the AAP government has launched 'Bulldozer Justice' against small drug peddlers and failed to check the black sheep within Punjab Police.

This is the second episode in a month when AAP government was found shielding the cops, in first instance Punjab Government faced wrath of family of Colonel Pushpinder Singh and his son Angad Singh who were assaulted by four Inspectors and their gunmen on the night of March 14 at Patiala. No FIR was registered on the complaint of Col Pushpinder who had a broken arm and his son had head injury. A FIR was lodged after a week on the intervention of top authorities of Western command of Army but no policeman was named.

Jasvinder Kaur wife of Col Bath started dharna against SSP Nanak Singh and under public pressure FIR was lodged naming the four Police Inspectors though they were suspended from service. She met the CM Bhagwant Mann on March 31 for CBI probe into the assault of her husband. Though CM gave her the assurance to give justice by 5 PM same day but nothing happened for two days. She finally moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the case was transferred to Chandigarh Police.

Would Chief Minister orders an independent probe to let the truth come out in IPS officer shielding the drug tainted lady cop and his viral audio or he will once again try to hush the matter under the carpet?
