AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) today strongly objected to the decision of Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma to extend support to BJP in Maharashtra elections.
Gurcharan Singh Grewal General Secretary of SGPC in a statement said that the whole Sikh community was pained at the announcement of Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma. He said that Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala who headed Damdami Taksal always fought against the center government on Sikh issues. He said that decision by Dhumma was not in line with the expectations of Sikhs.
Grewal said that Dhumma was respectable but his action of supporting BJP was not acceptable. He said that Baba Dhumma must clarify his stand.
The Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) has also criticised decision of Dhumma to support BJP in Maharashtra elections. The SAD spokesman said that decision was against the ideals of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala. He said that BJP was working against the interests of Sikh community.
It is recalled that Baba Dhumma was very close to Badal family and former Chief Minister late Parkash Singh Badal had played key role in installment of Baba Dhumma as head f Damdami Taksal despite opposition by disciples of Sant Bhindrawala.
Dhumma who released a video and also attended a press conference of Sant Samaj in Mumbai had appealed Sikhs to vote for BJP in Maharashtra assembly elections.
