CHANDIGARH: The power position in Punjab worsened on Tuesday morning after one unit of 660 MW at the Talwandi Sabo thermal plant and one unit of 210 MW at the Ropar thermal plant closed due to boiler leakage.
It will take two to three days to plug the boiler lelake at both units. One unit each at Talwandi Sabo and Ropa is already under maintenance shutdown.At present 5 out of 15 thermal units in the state are operating.
Ranjit Sagar Dam 2 power units, which operate during peak hours have been made operational to bridge the demand-supply gap to some extent.
On Monday the power supply in the state was 1730 lakh units against the restricted demand og 1751 lakh units. During night hours Punjab faced a shortage of 300 MW. The maximum demand of state is around 8200 MW. The power cuts in Kandi area and other rural areas are already being imposed by PSPCL.
In the adjoining Haryana the domestic and industrial consumers are suffering long power cuts as power demand in the state exceeds power supply.
There is a shortage of at least 93 lakh units against a demand of 1658 lakh units. The maximum demand met in the state is 7800 MW with a shortage of 1530 MW during night hours. The maximum cuts on Adani Power and Coastal Gujarat Power(CGPL) is not supplying committed power of 1800 MW as per the power purchase agreements for the last 7 to 8 months and stressing for higher rate of power.
HPPC has filed a petition before regulator to approve the procurement of 500 MW for 3 years MB Power and RKM Powergen. The supply from MB Power will be 150 MW at Rs 5.7 per unit , while RKM Powergen will supply 350 MW at Rs 5.75 per unit.
