Review of arrangements for protection of human rights of women prisoners at Central Jail
AMRITSAR: National Commission for Women member Mrs. Mamata Kumari, while holding a meeting with the officials at the District Administrative Complex, directed that medical check-ups of women living in old age homes should be ensured from time to time and their Ayushman cards should also be made.
She said that the main need of the hour is to give priority to protecting the interests of women and to resolve the problems they are facing.
Earlier, the member of the commission visited Amritsar Central Jail and obtained information about the cases of women.
She said that their cases should be resolved by setting up a court inside the jail itself.
She asked the jail officials to ensure that the female prisoners are allowed to meet their family members so that they do not fall prey to depression.
She visited the Central Jail and reviewed the arrangements for protecting the human rights of the prisoners.
She interacted with the women prisoners in the Central Jail and listened to the problems faced by them so that information could be obtained about the free legal aid available as per the rules.
Mrs. Mamata directed the Central Jail and administrative officers to provide free legal aid to the needy women prisoners so that they can defend themselves despite not being financially capable .
She said that the prisoners must have Aadhaar cards for which a camp should be organized in the Central Jail.
Apart from this, arrangements should be made to provide pension to widowed women imprisoned in the Central Jail.
Apart from this, she ordered to provide complete treatment to the patients of diabetes and other serious diseases in the Central Jail.
She also inspected the system of providing work to female prisoners in the jail according to their skills and said that they should be given work according to their skills so that they can start their lives anew and contribute to the progress of the society.
She said that awareness programs should be conducted to improve the behavior of prisoners in the jail so that it can actually become a reformatory.
She said that the cases of prisoners who have been granted bail but do not have money to pay the bond should be immediately sent to the Free Legal Services Authority so that they can get out of the jail by taking advantage of free legal aid.
After this, the commission visited Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Old Age Home and interacted with the women. They said that they should be made aware about the pension schemes and other schemes being run by the department and that they should get the benefits of the schemes being run by the government.
Today, the Commission visited the Anganwadi centers at Harsha Chhina and reviewed the activities going on there. It got information about the self-help group formed by women at Block Harsha Chhina and while praising it said that it is a matter of great happiness that these women are not dependent on anyone. On this occasion, about 100 women of the self-help group were present.
On this occasion, Legal Counselor National Commission for Women Madam Shalni Singh, Assistant Commissioner General Madam Gursimran Kaur, Assistant Commissioner Madam Sonam Kumari, SDM Mr. Mankanwal Singh Chahal, SDM Ajnala Mr. Ravinder Singh Arora, Additional Commissioner Municipal Corporation Mr. Surinder Singh, DCP Law and Order Vijay Alam Singh, ACP Harkomaldeep Kaur, District Social and Security Officer Mrs. Meena Devi and other officials were also present.
