Akali Councilor Kamaljit Kaur Denies Supporting Congress Mayor Candidate

ASHOK KAURA | February 05, 2025 08:33 AM

PHAGWARA: Senior Akali Dal leader and Ward No. 9 Councilor Kamaljit Kaur has strongly refuted claims that she supported the Congress Party’s mayoral candidate in the recent Phagwara Municipal Corporation elections. Addressing the media alongside her husband, former councilor Kulwinder Singh Kinda, she dismissed the allegations as “completely false and baseless.”
Kaur stated that as a committed member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), she could never consider backing a Congress candidate. “The Congress Party is responsible for the 1984 attack on Sri Darbar Sahib and for orchestrating fake police encounters that led to the killing of innocent Sikh youths. Our family has always been dedicated to the Akali Dal and the Sikh Panth, ” she asserted.

Her husband, Kulwinder Singh Kinda, echoed her sentiments, emphasizing that their ward primarily consists of voters who have faith in the Sikh Panth and support the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). “Supporting the Congress would mean betraying both our faith and our voters, which we can never do, ” he said.
The controversy arose after senior Congress leader Sanjeev Bugga alleged that Kaur had shown support for the Congress mayoral candidate during a meeting of newly elected councilors. Reacting sharply, Kinda accused the Congress leaders of spreading false propaganda due to their frustration over failing to secure the mayoral position.
“Sanjeev Bugga and other Congress leaders have lost their mental balance after failing to get their candidate elected. Now, they are resorting to baseless statements to save their political image, ” Kinda remarked.
The political rivalry in Phagwara’s municipal elections has intensified in recent weeks, with both the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress engaging in heated exchanges over the leadership of the local body.
