Eminent Economist Dr Sukhdev Singh Grewal passes away

LUDHIANA: Dr Sukhdev Singh Grewal former Professor, Head of Department of Economics and Sociology, PAU, an eminent economist, great teacher passed away at the age of 88 years. He has been known as peoples’ economist as he is aware of all grassroot socio-economic problems of society. He not only spent whole life in the rural setting but also had remained the 'son of the soil' in the real sense.

Dr. Grewal has enormously enriched Economics Literature on varied topics such as Farm Management, Agricultural Marketing and Extension education. He was member of Punjab Govt Expert Committee on Diversification of Agriculture In Punjab which was chaired by Dr SS Johal. Dr Grewal co-authored a report on 'Water resources of Punjab – A critical Concern for future of its Agriculture' in 1990 which first time raised concerns about over exploitation of ground water in Punjab and its future implication. His Bulletin on "Agro-climatic Zones in Punjab, has been widely accepted as the scientific climatic division of Punjab and is being widely used for all practical purposes of research in all disciplines.

Dr. Grewal represented various Expert Committees of the Punjab and Indian Governments and has played a pivotal role in suggesting policies on problems of agriculture in Punjab, rural employment and economy, Ravi Beas River Water Dispute, Reduction of Costs on production of crops. Thesa reports were acclaimed by policy-makers, scientists, researchers and administrators of various departments.

The Bhog and Antim Ardas of Dr Grewal will be held on 16th April, Sunday at 11.00-1.00 PM at his native village Ballowal Near Jodhan, Ludhiana.
