Army and Punjab Police are not on same page for 'time bound' probe by SIT into Col Bath assault case

CHANDIGARH: The senior army officerand Punab DGP Gaurav Yadav today held a joint press conference here to address the case related to assault of Col Pushpinder Singh Bath by police officials but they differed in their statements on claim of time bound probe into the matter. Both the officers read writen statements and didnt take any questions by media.

The Army officer said that the had taken up the case at highest level for delivery of justice. He said that police had regretted the incident and identified the culprits. The FIR was registered and SIT was set up to complete the case in earliest possible time. Such an incident was undesirable and reiterate a fair and time bound investigation.

DGP Gaurav Yadav endorsing the statement of Army offier, said that SIT will conduct a fair investiation and culprits would be punished. He also informed that department action has also been initaited. He however din't mention the time frame for investigation. He only said investigatrion will be compelted as soon as possible.

It is recalled that already two probes had been ordered, first by SSP Patiala Nanak Singh who said that departmental inquiry will be completed in 45 dfays. Punjab Government had formed SIT and said that probe will be compelted in three weks. But at today's press conference no final date of SIT submitting its report is given by DGP.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today took up a petition filed by Col Bath today to demand CBI probe in case of assault. The High Court issued notice to Punjab Govenment for March 26. The High Court had asked the state government why FIR regsitration was delayed and who are the officers who ordered not to register FIR. The High Court has expressed anguish over the incident and its handling.
