Expert talk on duties of citizens at RBU

MOHALI: An expert talk on Fundamental Duties of Citizens was organized at Rayat Bahra University. Justice Haripal Verma, former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court and Lokayukta Haryana, was the chief guest. Avinash Rai Khanna, former MP, was the other speaker.

Chancellor of Rayat Bahra University Gurvinder Singh Bahra and Vice-Chancellor Dr Parvinder Singh welcomed the two speakers on their arrival.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Verma said that Fundamental Duties of Citizens act as a reminder to the citizens that in addition to the enjoyment of rights, they also have to perform certain duties towards the nation they live in. In essence, Fundamental Duties can be summarised as a set of moral and ethical obligations that citizens are expected to uphold towards a nation.

He said duties are sections of the Constitution of India that prescribe the fundamental obligations of the states to its citizens and the duties and the rights of the citizens to the State These sections are considered vital elements of the constitution, which was developed between 1949 by the Constituent Assembly of India. Justice Verma also shared his life experiences with the students.

Avinash Rai Khanna, speaking on the occasion, said the Fundamental Duties are defined as the moral obligations of all citizens to help promote a spirit of patriotism and to uphold the unity of India. These duties set out in Part IV–A of the Constitution, concern individuals and the nation. Like the Directive Principles, they are not enforceable by courts unless otherwise made enforceable by parliamentary law.
