CHANDIGARH: The martyrs are the treasure trove of entire society as their deeds of bravery & patriotism inspire an entire generation. Hence, they must be kept away from petty politics and their legacy needs to be respected. These views were expressed here today in a statement by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Forest & Wildlife Preservation Minister Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak.

The Minister was reacting to the labeling of Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh as a terrorist before the Lahore High Court. The Assistant Advocate General of Pakistan’s Punjab Government, Asghar Leghari, made these dastardly remarks while representing Lahore Metropolitan Corporation in the High Court in connection with the case to rename the Shadman Chowk (Once a part of the Central Jail, Lahore) in Lahore after the martyr. It is this very place where Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev were hanged by the British on March 23rd, 1931.

Calling Shaheed Bhagat Singh a great revolutionary , Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak said that Shaheed Bhagat Singh sacrificed his life for the cause of the freedom of the united India and hence, it is the duty of every person to give due respect to the hero of the Independence movement.

Exhorting such conspiracy mongers to come out of their communal mindset, the Minister said that Shaheed Bhagat Singh is a hero of the entire Indian Subcontinent and it is a cowardly act by the hardliners to label such an illustrious freedom fighter as terrorist. Such elements cause unimaginable damage to the overtures of peace between the two countries.

Notably, Shaheed-e-Azam Welfare Society of Lahore has been fighting for renaming the Shadman Chowk after the martyr’s name.
