PHAGWARA: Congress Party will field only strong and winnable candidates in the Phagwara Municipal Corporation elections.
The announcement was made by former minister Aruna Chaudhary during a screening Committee meeting of the congress workers held here today. She emphasized that this strategy is crucial to securing Congress’ control over the Municipal Corporation in Phagwara.
The screening committee meeting, organized at the local K.G. Resort, witnessed the participation of key Congress leaders, including AICC-appointed coordinators Alok Sharma and Ravindra Umrao, committee chairman Aruna Chaudhary, and former MLAs Navtej Singh Cheema, Sukhpal Bhullar, and Harinderpal Singh Harry, along with MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal.
The committee held discussions with aspiring candidates to hear their views and aspirations. Addressing the gathering, committee members stressed the importance of unity among Congress workers, stating that collective efforts are essential to win the elections.
During the meeting, MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal highlighted the lack of development in Phagwara, criticizing the current administration for neglecting basic infrastructure. “Streetlights remain non-functional in many areas, roads are in terrible condition, and garbage piles can be seen across the city, ” he said, adding that these pressing issues have created widespread dissatisfaction among residents. He expressed confidence that these factors would work in favour of Congress during the elections.
Former Minister Aruna Chaudhary revealed that the screening process for potential candidates is already underway. “Shortlisted candidates will be announced soon, and only those with strong prospects of victory will be fielded, ” she said. She assured aspiring candidates that the selection process will be fair and transparent, with no room for favouritism.
Chaudhary also criticized the current government for failing to deliver on its promises, including delayed financial benefits for women under welfare schemes. “The public is increasingly disillusioned with the government’s policies, which have offered little more than empty promises, ” she stated.
The committee urged party workers to set aside differences and work collectively for the elections. “Success in these elections depends on our unity and hard work, ” said the members, calling for a collaborative approach to campaigning.
The meeting saw the participation of prominent local leaders, including former block president Bunty Walia, Munish Prabhakar, Sanjeev Bugga, Vinod Vermani, Padam Dev Sudhir, Gurjitpal Walia, Billu Khera, Amarjit Nijjar, Sushil Maini, Sangeeta Dheer, Tripta Sharma, Minakshi Verma, Shavinder Nishchal, Ranjit Kaur Rani (Mahila President), and Munish Bhardwaj.
